Cerritos Community

Fairly new, middle-class-plus bedroom city located about two miles northeast of Long Beach. Exceptionally well-maintained. A handsome suburb. School rankings among the tops in the state. Population is almost 60,000.

Cerritos Education

Education by ABC District, which also serves Lakewood, Hawaiian Gardens and Artesia. Sample rankings for Cerritos schools: Wittman Elementary, high 90s; Carmenita Junior High, 90s and Whitney High, 99th percentile. In 1999, 22 high schools in California scored over 600 on the math SAT. The ABC district had two of them, Whitney (academic magnet school for district), 684 (highest in the state), and Cerritos, 608. Voters in 1997 approved a $25 million bond to renovate schools. Work under way.

Cerritos History

Cerritos is a late bloomer. It did not get its start until the late 1960s and the 1970s. In the latter decade, it built 10,504 residential units (great majority single homes) or about two-thirds of its current housing. The U.S. came out of World War II fearing that the Depression would return. As prosperity took hold in the 1950s and 1960s, the homes and garages grew bigger, the closets larger, the kitchens better equipped, the decorative touches nicer.

Cerritos Housing

Coming to life when it did, Cerritos presents a more modern, more upscale look than its neighbors. Utility lines have been placed underground and median strips planted. The city has been divided into neighborhoods (Shadow Park, Rancho Cerritos) and walls surround each section. This dampens noise and reduces the number of vehicles on residential streets.

Cerritos Lifestyle

One mall greets shoppers with a waterfall that cascades over boulders. A second mall has a Nordstrom, a Sears and Mervyn's. Rare for an L.A. County suburb, four-bedroom homes outnumber three bedrooms in Cerritos. If you want a large home, this is a good place to look. Many homes ascend to two stories.
